William Parven is the 16 year old on Bear Grylls Escape From Hell that loves going on hikes and climbing Mountains. The day William decided to climb Mount San Gorgonio located in
California this is the day he turned into a man. William had been wanting to
climb San Gorgonio for awhile and one day he convinced his family to go on the long days hike. About three quarters of the way up, William
realized at their current pace they would not be able to reach the summit. William decides he could still make it if
he left his sister and his dad behind, but little did they know this might of been the last time they ever seen William again.
On the way up to the summit William was making really
good time making sure he could get to the top when he started coming down with
altitude sickness. William could see the summit and decides to keep going higher.
Summit fever is when you can
see the top and nothing is going to stop you from making it the top including
altitude sickness. It gives you a sense of invincibility that can be the
most dangers thing of all because the only thing your focusing on is making it to the top of the summit and nothing else.
William makes makes the summit with no time
to spare and is forced to turn around and begin his decent before nightfall. William is still thinking
about the summit when he starts running down the mountain and triggering the worst
thing you could do when experiencing altitude sickness.
On the way down Parvin realizes he doesn't recognize the trail he came up on but continues on heading down. Little does William know he's going farther and farther into the middle of nowhere. As the sun starts
going down he realizes he's going to have to spend the night with nothing
more than a jacket, flash light and a small pack with a little food.
Parvin has gone camping before but that
was with a bunch of camping gear and his family. The16 year old William has never spent the night in the woods alone
and it will be a night he will never forget.
William awakes to a rustling sound and
takes a look with his flash light, it’s just a deer that no big deal. A couple
hours later William wakes up again hearing a similar sound but this time it's a huge black bear less than 10 feet away. He freezes not
sure what to do and then he realizes he needs to distract the bear so
he throws his pack that contained what little food he had. The bear takes the bait
giving William just enough time for him to get away still in the darkness of night.
Now William has been missing for more than
24 hours and his family reports him missing and a full blown Search and Rescue begins. Parvin has been walking in the wrong direction the entire time and now very far from
where he first began. William
comes across a small stream and realizes the trail he followed crossed over a
stream several times and starts following the stream. Soon after William comes
to a impassible water fall, with no other way around he decides to climb down
the 40 ft. waterfall.
Being in a survival situation you would
never want to risk your life getting down a waterfall but William is successful and continues on. He is feeling invincible again after completing such a
difficult task when another waterfall is in the path down the mountain.
William feeling invincible rushes into it and slips and
hits his head. He wakes up with a concussion and realizes he is now
at the bottom of the water fall. In a lot of pain, William decides to push on..
Parvin eventually finds and follows down a dirt road after 5 days of surviving on very little, when he finally Escapes From Hell and rescued off the mountain when he spots a vehicle.

Bear Grylls Escape From Hell Premier Episode 1
Season Premiere on Discovery Channel November 11, 2013
The Escape From Hell Season Premier with Bear Grylls starts November, 11 at 10 ET/PT on the Discovery Channel. Knowing Bear's reputation, this will once again be a very exciting and extreme premiere episode with survival stories that will put even Bear Grylls himself in extreme survival situations. All three survival stories are real which Grylls will re-enact on what he might do different if ever in the same set of survival circumstances.
Charles Horton's Survival Story
Charles did manage to build a fire the first night, but little did he know at the time it would be the last fire he would feel for the remainder of his 9 day survival experience in the middle of winter. Fortunately for Charles one of the few survival pack supplies he had on him was a whistle that very well may of what untimely saved his life.
Eric Le Marque Survival Story
You may of already heard of Eric Le Marque as the famous Olympian or during his career in the National Hockey League NHL, but Eric's survival story on Mammoth Mountain in Northern California, is one that will put him in the record books as a True Survivor on several different fronts.Le Marque's Escape From Hell Survival Experience all started one day while up snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain on one foggy day. With a major storm closely moving in, the decision was made to close down the ski area early for the safety of all the skiers as visibility was becoming extremely poor. Most everyone on the mountain obeyed the safety patrols orders and headed for the warm Ski Lodge below. Everyone except for Eric Le Marque who decided to get one more run in by hiking back up the mountain before starting his foggy decent into hell. That last run would untimely last 7 nights freezing in the middle of winter and after falling into the freezing river while trying to get a drink of water. By the time Search and Rescue finally did locate Eric, Hypothermia had already set in so severely that both feet needed to be amputated and could not be saved.
Sebastain Boucher
Sebastain Boucher a 33 Snowboarder found him self lost in the wilderness after taking a wrong turn while snowboarding down Cypress Mountain. He was lost for three days in the middle of December without food, water or any sleep. The North Star search and rescue teams found Sebastian on the 3rd day after spotting fresh racks in the snow which untimely saved his life during his winter survival experience. Sebastian lost 18 pounds in the three days and had severe frost bite on his hands and feet.

This first episode of Bear Grylls Escape From Hell New Reality TV Show has a lot of valuable lessons on how easy a seemingly simple mistake in the Great Outdoors can quickly become a life or death survival situation in a big hurry. Always being prepared no matter what you're doing in the woods is always the best advice, and the knowledge of knowing what to do with what you have could someday be invaluable and save your life.
Bear Grylls Escape From Hell Episode 5
Escape From Hell Episode 5
In Episode 5 of Bear Grylls Escape From Hell there are three incredible survival stories that Bear reenacts the scenario in Dolomites Italy. The mountain Bear decides to reenact these survival stories is in the Dolomites Mountains that have a rich history in outdoor activities, but have also killed 29 people last year alone. All 3 survival stories in this episode all have one common theme that led to a real life survival situation they were all lucky enough to get out alive.William Parven's Survival Story
Bear Grylls will first re-enact the outdoor survival story about William Parven, a 16 years old that loves the outdoors and hiking in particular. William set out to climb Mount San Gorgonio in Southern California with his sister and father when half way up leaves them behind hoping to reach the summit before dark. In a desperate attempt to reach the top of Mt. San Gorgonio and still get down before night fall, William starts getting summit fever which also starts affecting his thinking process from over exerting himself at such a high level. Parven does summit Mt. San Gorgonio but on the way down takes a wrong turn which instantly puts himself in a life threatening situation from that moment on.
William finds himself starring face to face with a real Bear and wild dogs along the way. At one point he is forced to jump off a 40 ft waterfall if he has any chance of getting off this huge mountain alive.. Less than a mile later he comes across another water fall, feeling more confident rushes into it, slips and knocks him out. Bear Grylls will reenact this real survival story that lasts 5 days until Parvin manages to walk out of the wilderness on his own when the Search and Rescue Teams were starting to lose hope finding him alive.
Dan Stephens Survival Story
The second survival story Bear Grylls will re-create came from Dan Stephens an avid outdoors man and scout. When Dan was guiding on a scouting trip in Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, he finds himself lost and helpless when he goes to find a path to the next lake. Dan uses a method known as spoking to make sure he didn't get lost but that did not work after Dan falls and knocks himself out which instantly put him in a life threatening survival situation. Dan wakes up disoriented having no idea where he is and becomes very confused to his whereabouts. Not even sure what to do Dan decides to climb a 100 plus foot pine tree with a concussion to get his bearings as to where he even was. But by the time he climbed down the tree he didn't remember which way to go. That night he finds the North Star in the sky and creates an arrow on the ground pointing south towards a lake he knows is there. Later the next day he decides he needs to build a fire using the lens off his binoculars but fails in his efforts.
Three days without food he decides to eat ants that happened to be crawling all over him. Dan runs into swap land and develops trench foot that also made it very hard to walk. On the fourth day he hears a rescue helicopter and runs down to the shore but they never see him. Dan finally runs into a group of scouts that at first thought he was going to rob them, but is finally convinced Stephens is in desperate need of help and most likely just saved his life by being in the right place at the right time.
Jamie Neale Survival Story
Teenager Jamie Neale got lost in the Blue Mountains of Australia for 12 days in 1999 when all hope was fading he would ever get out of this survival situation alive. Hundreds of people unwillingly get lost on the woods or find themselves in a survival situation every year, but very few ever get National attention much less World Wide Media coverage concerning a real survival story. This is one story that takes a lot of bizarre twists and turns and is still in the media even to this day. How could a teenager make so many critical mistakes that almost cost him his life, and in the end ultimately cost him his relationship with his own Dad over money?
Jamie and his Dad Richard Cass who was relentless in the Search and Rescue efforts, ended up signing a contract with 60 Minutes TV Show to tell this Survival Story that's already gained a lot of media attention. When word got out they were paid over $100,000.00 US on what led to Jamie surviving in the woods for almost 2 weeks, some suggested this may of been staged for monetary gain. What really blew up this story is when Jamie refused to give his Dad any of the money from a contract they both signed. From everything I could find they still are not talking even to this day. It will be interesting how Bear Grylls deals with this particular survival situation and if any of the aftermath after Jamie's experience will come up during episode 5 of Escape From Hell.

Bear Grylls Fire is Life Episode
Escape From Hell: Start Fire w Battery & Gum
Being stuck in the middle of nowhere in several feet of snow is a bad enough situation but add no way of starting a fire and you're in for one very long and cold night. In this episode of Escape From Hell Sebastian Boucheris is forced to spend the night in heavy snow with no way of making a fire other than rubbing sticks together. Unless you're an old pro with lots of experience, creating fire from the friction by rubbing sticks together is no easy task even in the best of conditions.
Bear Grylls who is a master at starting fire using the friction method, first tries his hand at starting a fire in the same conditions that Boucher was in during his survival situation. With everything still moist from the recent snow, this even proved impossible for Bear Grylls to get a spark going under these extreme conditions.
Because Sebastion was never able to get a fire going that night, it came very close to costing his life as he almost froze to death as a result. Boucher obviously didn't have any traditional way to start a fire on him, but what he did have was a flashlight and a stick of gum which was all he needed if he had only known about this wilderness survival technique to create fire.
In this episode of "Escape From Hell" Bear Grylls demonstrates how easy it is to use a battery and a stick of gum to start a fire in even the worst of conditions.. Bear uses the aluminum foil off a piece of gum to short the battery out and create a flame. Had Sabastian known this simple technique to start a fire fast, that very long night could have been accompanied with a heat source and a "Friend" keeping him company until the next day. If you have even been lost (mis-located) in the woods and forced to spend the night, you probably know exactly what I mean. Fire is truly a life saver under any survival situation and one you should always have several ways of making anytime you're in the Great Outdoors.

What if you don't have a stick of gum or for that matter a battery? If you at least have a battery you can use any metal object like a zipper off a jacket to short the battery out for instance. The best thing is always have in your survival pack several ways of starting a fire including that old faithful Bic lighter.
If you ever find yourself going way into the snowy forest without at least one method (preferably multiple ways) of starting a fire, the best advice is to turn around while you still can. Fire is the one thing you never what to survive a winter night (or any night) without.
What other methods of starting a fire using non conventional methods can you think of?

Bear Grylls Kamikaze Rope
Bear Grylls Kamikaze Knot

How To Tie A Kamikaze Knot on Bear Grylls "Escape From Hell" |
As long as you keep tension on the rope the Kamikaze knot will support your weight until you successfully repel to the bottom and then easily comes undone simply by letting off the tension. That sounds all fine and dandy, but a knot called the Kamikaze that you cut with a knife before you repel off a 100 ft. cliff sounds more than a little dangerous, unless of course you know how to tie this particular knot.
The Kamikaze knot is a variation of the Sheepshank knot. The one difference between the kamikaze and the sheep-shank is you cut the center rope after your done tying the kamikaze knot. This knot takes a lot of practice and a somewhat of crazy person to use, but under the right survival situation where you cannot afford to leave your rope behind, the Kamikaze knot Bear Grylls uses on The Escape from Hell Survival Show might be your best alternative.
Personally I'm not sure I would ever trust a knot that had the word kamikaze in the name, but that's my option and it's good to know how to tie in case I ever really need to use a rappelling set up like this.
One problem with the way Bear Grylls made this rappel on the Escape from Hell Show was he left his anchor on the top of the cliff with no way to retrieve this part of the rigging. Unless it's absolutely necessary this would not be a good idea for a few different reasons. For one he had no way of retrieving his anchor and doesn't know if there's another place to anchor off after he got down on the ledge. It might of been worth walking around until you find a place you could do it in one repel or multiple repels using the Traveler's Knot which would seem a lot safer of an option. Considering the Kamakaze Knot will hold its load until you let off tension, you could also use this when constructing your anchor point and keep cutting off pieces as you make multiple repels, but ya good luck, there's a reason they appropriately named this knot.

Here's a video clip of Bear Grylls on the Escape From Hell Show when he uses the Kamikaze Knot to rapel down a 100 foot cliff. I hope Discovery Channel paid him good to do that survival trick.

"Escape From Hell" New Reality Survival Show from Bear Grylls |
By the looks of the trailer for the new Escape From Hell Survival Show, Mr. Grylls is taking his new Survival Show to a whole new level using techniques that make even the hardest of hard core think twice. The season premiere was first shown in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2013 and will make its debut in the United States November 11, 2013. The Discovery Channel will also show the second episode a few days later on Wednesday November 13, 2013 at 10 p.m. which will be the regular time slot.
Did Bear Grylls really run into a Grizzly Bear in the wild when filming Escape From Hell? That's one episode I definitely have to watch!
After watching several hours of Bear Grylls on Man vs Wild and Get Out Alive when he was working with NBC, a lot of the survival techniques Bear uses is not explained in detail which has led to a lot of searching on the Internet finding some of the answers. Have you even seen Bear Grylls use any of his survival techniques and thought you might have something to contribute to make it even more efficient? We have also and now we'll have a place to dissect some of Bear Gylls Survival Skills seen on Escape From Hell.
A little History about Bear Grylls Survival Training
Bear Grylls real name is Edward Michael Grylls who was born June 7, 1974 in Northern Ireland. You would think being known by the name Bear it would have been acquired in some survival situation where Edward fights off an attacking Bear and thus acquired the name. But the reality is his older sister thought he looked like a little Teddy Bear when he was first born, and the name stuck ever since.Bear Grylls Military Training consists of a stint on Active Duty before being accepted in the British SAS where he spent 3 years on reserves. As with all the U.S. Special Forces, the SAS also requires everyone in Group to be jump Qualified and Bear was no exception. In 1996 Grylls was doing a free fall jump at 16,000 ft. when he had a canopy malfunction occur. Instead of cutting his main chute loose and deploying his reserve chute, Bear thought he had enough time to correct the malfunction, but ran out of time and landed with a partially collapsed parachute. Bear came as close to being paralyzed for life as you could come, but after a full year of rehabilitation, he was on his way to a full recovery.
The list of accomplishments on Bear Grylls Wiki Page is very impressive and clearly practices what he preaches whether the cameras are rolling or not. Check out a list of Bear's websites listed below and if you see new survival techniques you think are practical or just plain crazy, come on back to the Escape from Hell Blog and let's discuss it.
